The West End’s production of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage, which ended its run at London’s Gieguld Theatre in June, is scheduled to hit Broadway in spring 2009. Director Matthew Warchus, who helmed the dynamic drama featuring a translation by Christopher Hampton, will also direct the forthcoming Rialto staging. Theater, dates and casting will be announced at a later date.
The London production, about the aftermath of a playground fight between two boys and what happens when their parents meet to talk about it, starred Academy award nominee Ralph Fiennes, Tamsin Greig, Janet McTeer who is set to star in the upcoming transfer of Mary Stuart and Ken Scott. According to The New York Post, former Sopranos star James Gandolfini and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden are eyeing the Broadway run, though no stars have been confirmed as of this time.
Paris-based playwright Reza is best known for her critically acclaimed hit play Art, which enjoyed an eight year run on the West End before transferring to Broadway, where it won a 1998 Tony award for Best Play. Warchus was honored last season when his Boeing-Boeing successfully transferred from London to Broadway, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival over Hampton's returning hit Les Liaisons Dangereuses.
